What Is Alkyd Resin?

Alkyd resin is a polyester-modified synthetic resin formed by the polycondensation of polyols, dibasic acids, and fatty acids.
It is one of the most versatile and widely used binders in the global coatings industry — accounting for over 40% of all
synthetic coating resins
produced worldwide.

Known for excellent substrate adhesion, high gloss retention, weathering resistance,
and compatibility with a wide range of pigments and solvents, alkyd resins are the backbone of architectural paints,
wood finishes, industrial maintenance coatings, and automotive refinish systems.

Types of Alkyd Resin by Oil Length

Union Chemical offers all three major alkyd resin grades. Oil length determines the resin’s flexibility, hardness, drying speed, and solvent compatibility.

1. Long Oil Alkyd Resin (>60% Oil)

Best for: Architectural paints, wood stains, anti-corrosion primers, brush-applied coatings.

  • Excellent flexibility and substrate wetting
  • Superior brushability and flow-out
  • Good exterior durability and yellowing resistance
  • Compatible with aliphatic solvents and low-VOC formulations

2. Medium Oil Alkyd Resin (40-60% Oil)

Best for: General industrial paints, machinery coatings, metal furniture, interior/exterior decorative paints.

  • Well-balanced hardness and flexibility
  • Fast drying with good gloss development
  • Excellent adhesion to metal and wood substrates
  • Available in air-drying and baking-cure grades

3. Short Oil Alkyd Resin (30-40% Oil)

Best for: Automotive OEM coatings, high-gloss industrial finishes, baking enamels.

  • High hardness with fast cure (< 30 min at 120°C)
  • Exceptional gloss (20° gloss > 85 GU)
  • Outstanding chemical and solvent resistance
  • Requires baking or two-component curing systems

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

Standard MOQ is 1 metric ton (5 drums × 200 kg) for trial orders. For established partnerships, full container loads (20 MT / 20′ FCL) offer the best freight economics.

Do you provide free samples?

Yes. We ship 1-3 kg evaluation samples at no cost for qualified buyers. Freight can be arranged on your courier account or prepaid by Union Chemical for high-potential projects.

What certifications do your alkyd resins hold?

Our products comply with ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management), REACH (EU), and RoHS standards. SGS testing reports are available upon request.

Can you match a competitor’s alkyd resin?

Absolutely. Send us a sample or technical data sheet of the resin you currently use, and our R&D team will benchmark and produce an equivalent formulation — often at a more competitive price.
